California released the proposed rates for health insurance that will be sold through its online exchange, and the prices, by any measure, are far more affordable than predicted by critics.

Covered California, which will serve as the states “health insurance marketplace,” will offer four options, described as Bronze, Silver, Gold, and Platinum, as well as a catastrophic plan. On average, Californians will pay $331 per month for health insurance, $100 less per month than federal government estimates.

The rates vary widely based on age and geographic location. Covered California used the example of a 40-year-old man purchasing a Silver plan, which would cost as little as $222 per month provided he lived in Los Angeles and purchased it from HealthNet HMO, and as much as $365 per month if he lived in Alameda and purchased it from Kaiser.
